We can't even begin to describe how thankful we are that we are out of harm's way, and that our home won't be getting a direct hit. We are also thankful and happy to be back in the motorhome traveling... we didn't know how much we missed it until we left to get gas the other day! It is refreshing and exciting. We are once again in an RV community with full hookups (water, sewer, electric), have a dumpster, and can use a great laundry facility! Not to mention the pool with a waterslide and a hot tub.
Since we're at this campground waiting out the last of Hurricane Irma, I thought I'd share our growing list of campgrounds we visit. After every visit, we documented all the pros, cons, things close by, and things to do. I'll just summarize the main points to make it brief. In chronological order:
Valley Vineyards Winery, Cincinnati, Ohio. Stayed June 2017, used Harvest Hosts.
- Free with Harvest Host membership, but no hookups, and we were in the back of a gravel parking lot.
- It was hot, and a rough time for the dog. Otherwise, it was fun to see all the fireflies.
- We bought a bottle of champagne. Make sure to refrigerate it before drinking.
Crossroads Campground, Elizabethtown, KY. Stayed June 2017, used Good Sam.
- This is in our Top 3 Favorite Campgrounds. It was a long pull-thru site in a small and intimate campground yet spaced out enough where we weren't on top of other people.
- The bath house had CLEAN showers, the laundry room was big, and we couldn't have asked for a better location.
- This is near Kroger, Cracker Barrel, lots of gas stations, Abe Lincoln sights, the Bourbon Trail, and Mammoth Caves. So much to do in only 5 days. The locals were friendly.
Tanbark Campground, Dickson, TN. Stayed June 2017, used Good Sam
- This was a friendly, easy to get to park with a wide site, even if it was in the middle of no where. There were a lot of long term residents, and the bathroom stall doors were taller than the toilets. E for Effort?
- It was a really relaxing campground. The friendly owner had horses & the paddocks went right up to the edge of the campground.
- This is near Love's with a Subway & McDonalds inside, Wal Mart, an hourish away from Nashville and Belle Mead Plantation.
Tom Sawyer RV Park, West Memphis, AR. Stayed June 2017, used Good Sam
- This was a fun little place right on the Mississippi River. They escort you to your site and pick up your garbage, and have FREE laundry. They also have hiking trails and tree houses, but don't forget to put on bug spray, because there are A LOT of mosquitoes! Or you could sit on one of the benches near the river and watch the barges. Just look out for poison ivy.
- The sites themselves are not really shaded, but they are long & wide. There are three different groups of sites. 2 are closer to the river (and more expensive, and louder because you are closer to the barges) and one further back, cheaper and quieter.
- This was close to Memphis, TN, and we explored the city for a day and toured to the Woodruff-Fontaine House on Millionaire's Row. It's also close to the thruway, Wal Mart, and Cracker Barrel.
Frog Hollow, Grenada, MS, Stayed June 2017
- This was a friendly and fun little place with level pull thru sites. They have a rec center filled with things to do, and have resident kitties who like to chase squirrels up trees.
- If you stay here, you are REQUIRED to have a water pressure regulator. (No biggie)
- We stayed one rainy night, so we ordered Domino's, and they delivered right to our motorhome!
- It is right next to the thruway, and can get loud.
Springridge Mobile Estates and RV Park, Clinton, MS, stayed June 2017, used Good Sam
- This friendly park is a HOT parking lot. No green space unless you have a permanent mobile home with a yard. There is a pool and laundry facilities if you can get out of your small and narrow site.
- It's in a great location, near everything you could need, but it is just a bad setup.
- It's near Jackson, Waffle House, Tractor Supply, Walgreens, Home Depot, and more.
Pine Crest RV Park, Slidell, LA. Stayed June 2017, used Good Sam
- Miss Donna and Chuck make this friendly park in to a sanctuary just outside of NOLA. It has concrete pads that are level and long. We were able to fit our motorhome, trailer, AND a rental car in our site. You can also get mail here.
- We went through a tropical storm here, and while they are next to a river, all we got were puddles. We also got pine cones on our roof from the strong winds.
- This is 30 minutes away from NOLA's French Quarter, less than 5 minutes from the I-10, and about 40 minutes from the BEST Gator Tour ever at Kliebert's Alligator and Turtle Farm. We recommend renting a car instead of using Uber - it will be MUCH cheaper!
Eagle's Landing RV Park, Holt, FL. Stayed June 2017, First Responder discount.
- These perfectly priced long and wide sites were level with good hookups. They have a big dog walk and a community fire ring.
- This is near Pensacola Beach, Dollar General, and gas stations (with high prices so we didn't stop).
- If you stay here, you HAVE to check out the Gator Cafe, get a milkshake (Shawn got a chocolate one) and an order of corn nuggets. Well worth it, and well worth the budget.
Lake Seminole RV Park, Bainbridge, GA. Stayed June 2017.
- This $15 a night for full hookups is a laid back, relaxing place that will relax you. You are in Lake Seminole Park, so the sites are all grass, but SOLID.
- There isn't good cell reception which will help you relax more, work on your RV, and do some laundry for 75 CENTS.
- This is near a historic asylum, Piggly Wiggly, and if you are there on a Sunday, check out The Captain's Table Sunday buffet!
Ocala North, Ocala, FL. Stayed twice, June and July 2017, used Good Sam
- This is one of our top 3 locations. It's a great location with a perfect site and hookups. The people here are wonderful, and makes you feel as though you've come home.
- They have a pool, and a rec room where they hold BINGO on Tuesday nights during the off-season. It's near Winn Dixie, gas stations, antique store, a blacksmith, and the thruway.
- This is a great place to unwind, relax, and get some swimming in.
Sumter Oaks, Bushnell, FL. Stayed June-July 2017, used Escapees
- This long site with good drainage was right next to the fire pit and community room that had: a phone room, a full kitchen, a piano, a LIBRARY, a pool table room, a sewing and crafts room, and bathrooms.
- This is close to all the conveniences of being close to Town, and everything in it. It's also near Weeki Wachee Springs, Dade Battlefield, Hernando Beach, and Honeymoon Island. This campground is also "home" when you join Escapees Mail Forwarding in FL. This is also near a mine, so you can hear the trucks driving by.
- If you want a 50 amp site, it's back in. Pull thru sites are 30 amp.
Pines RV Park, Tifton, GA. Stayed July 2017, used Good Sam
- This long site with cable was in a friendly and quiet location close to a Harley Davidson dealership. They have a rec room with a TV, workout equipment, kitchen, and more.
- The dryer here leaves clothes damp, so you have to hang clothes up around the motorhome (because it was raining & couldn't be hung up outside).
- This is also close to a Dollar Tree WAREHOUSE that will blow your mind.
Shady Grove Campground, Cumming, GA. Stayed July 2017, part of County Park System
- This is a big and friendly campground, and your site is HUGE with two levels: one for your motorhome, and one for your fire pit/picnic table/outdoor space. Some sites are on Lake Lanier. You are surrounded by wildlife!
- You can go swimming in the manmade lake here, and when booking a site, ask for one that isn't close to the road!
- You are less than an hour from Atlanta, and everything in it. It's also a great place to relax, take walks, and enjoy nature.
Aiken RV Park, Aiken, SC. Stayed July 2017
- This easy going place has lots of long-term residents, making the mornings loud with their early morning commutes.
- It's a fairly level site and easy to get in and out of, but there is no shut-off for power.
New Green Acres, Walterboro, SC. Stayed July 2017
- These long sites with good hookups are easy to get to and close to A LOT. There is a cable hookup as well! But it does get muddy after it rains, and the grass wasn't mowed so there were lots of bugs when the rain let up.
- Their pool is open when the office is open, and the laundry is open 24/7, contrary to what is on the pamphlet.
- This is near Charleston, a Wildlife Refuge Trail, and everything you could need.
RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Stayed September 2017 because of Hurricane Irma. Used Good Sam.
- This friendly and amazing little RV Park has 81 GREAT sites. Ours is on a concrete pad with hookups, but since we have the trailer, we aren't close enough to hook up to cable.
- This place has a pool with a water slide, a hot tub, a pavilion with a community grill, fire place, pool table, and other games, the bath house is HUGE and CLEAN, and the mini-shop in the office has a good supply of necessary items if people forget them.
- This is close to historic Halifax, a Save a Lot, Food Lion, and a town stocked with shops for your every need.
And that's it! 16 stops in our journey. So much fun, so many memories, and so much more to see!
